Stop building websites

The mobile revolution is here, it’s growing, and I think we’ve yet to scratch the surface of what will happen and what innovation we’ll see in the next 3-5 years.  I’ve already given you my predictions for the mobile OS market in 2015.  So why are companies still so focused on designing websites and web apps?  Because today, and for a long time to come, the eye balls are on the web.  However, going forward, we’ll be more and more focused on mobile uses of every application online.

While re-designing some side projects, I’ve decided to focus on the mobile apps.  The website will have all the important features (I don’t disagree that the web is still where the eyeballs are), but we are designing it with the iPad, and any Android tablet that comes out, in mind.  The mobile apps are the drivers of our requirements, not old web paradigms.  I’m not doing any hover state or onMouseOver actions.  If you can’t touch it with your finger, we’re not doing it.  I’m also going to try to replicate the design in our iPad app.  That’s right, the cat’s out of the bag, I’ll be building an iPad app.  This is not a huge secret.  If you’re not building an iPhone app or an iPad app or both for your business, you will fail.  That’s all!

So I put a stake in the ground and challenge anyone who is designing, or re-designing a web application to STOP!  Stop now and design a user interface that you can create on both the web app and a native iPad app (or Android tablet).  A user will have the same if not identical user experience on both and they will be happy!
