Recently, when I interview candidates, I’ve started the interview by asking them a seemingly simple question:
"What are 3 things that I absolutely need to know about you; things that if you left this interview (or hung up the phone if it’s a phone screen), you’d regret I didn’t learn about you?
I’ve received a very wide range of responses, but I find that I’m able to learn a great deal about a person including:
- What the person is passionate about
- I get a great introduction the person’s communication skills as I’ve probably just caught them off guard. People are ready to talk about their experience, but this may be an uncommon question
- I often learn something that I may not have been planning to ask or that wasn’t on their resume
I’m also often able to riff off of one of their responses to find follow up questions that help me get to know the person better as well.
What are some other interview techniques that work for you and that you’ve seen people use?
